An explosion caused by “careless” handling of a grenade in Russia’s Belgorod region killed three people and injured 16 others, Russian news agencies reported.

The explosion took place in a cultural center that was intended for the Russian armed forces to store ammunition, the agencies said, citing local emergency services.

“After the sergeant’s inadvertent detonation of a hand grenade, a fire broke out. Sixteen soldiers, including the perpetrator of the explosion, were taken to the hospital. Three more people died,” local emergency services confirmed, citing the agencies. In addition, the Interfax agency reported that eight people are believed to be missing.

Channels linked to Russian law enforcement reported that the dead and wounded were conscripts called up to fight in Ukraine as part of the mobilization operation. The explosion was reported to have occurred after a senior soldier accidentally detonated a grenade in front of subordinates. The TASS news agency reported that the cause of the explosion was “careless handling of ammunition”. It was not specified when the incident occurred
