General Vladimir Makarov, who until recently served as deputy head of the main directorate of the Russian Interior Ministry for combating extremism, was found dead near Moscow, the Russian TASS news agency reported.

Vladimir Makarov, 72, was found dead in the village of Golikovo near Moscow. The TASS news agency reported, citing security services, that the general was about to take his own life. In January, he was dismissed from the post of deputy head of the main board of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs for combating extremism.

The Reuters agency writes that in Russia, the word “extremism” is used in relation to opposition groups, including a critic of the Kremlin, the imprisoned Alexei Navalny, or the media, which, according to the ruling regime, transmitted information deemed harmful to the state.
