– I call on us to raise respect Geneva Convention to the level of the highest political priority – he appealed during Monday's meeting of the Security Council UN head of the Swiss Foreign Ministry, Ignatius Cassis.

The Geneva summit on international human rights was attended by representatives from 14 out of 15 countries UN member states. The only absentee was the representative Russia.

Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia in New York Dmitry Polanskand in the issued statement he explained his absence by the alleged lack of justification for the meeting.

– We believe that the Security Council should focus on more important things than traveling around Europe – he said, adding that he considered the Russian involvement in the meeting “waste of time”.

Ignazio Cassis commented on the absence of a delegate from one of the member states. He stated that all representatives had been invited, but participation in the summit devoted to human rights it is not obligatory.

It should be noted that Dmitry Polyansky saw no obstacles to to appear at the meeting held at the end of July. He chaired a debate on the situation in the Middle East at the beginning of the month. At the beginning of the month, Russia took over the chairmanship of the UN Security Council for the first time since April 2023.

During Monday's debate in the UN Security Council, the issue of the need for reconsidering the assumptions of the Geneva Convention. Human rights were discussed in the context of ongoing armed conflicts around the world.

The President of the International Committee of the Red Cross, Mirjana Spoljaric, pointed out that the document's provisions are “tensioned” especially in the case of the wars taking place in the Gaza Strip and Ukraine.
