Russia. The head of the Investigative Committee of the Perm region, Sergei Sarapultsev, was found dead in his home on the outskirts of Perm. There is no official information about the causes of the colonel’s death, reported the Russian media. A few days earlier, 18-year-old Timur Bekmansurov attacked a local university that killed six people.
Versions about the causes of Sergei Sarapultsev’s death differ: Interfax sources say the main reason was a family conflict. According to other reports, the colonel committed suicide after an earlier meeting with his superior, the head of the Investigative Committee of Russia, Alexander Bastrykin. During the meeting, many Permian investigators were to be removed from participation in the investigation into the attack at the university, and Sarapultsev himself was to be told that he would be fired, independent Novaya Gazeta reported.
An interlocutor of “Nowa Gazeta” in the investigative bodies refused to comment on the participation of Perm officers in the investigation after the attack on the university and Sarapultsev’s future, but admitted that only Moscow experts are currently involved in the investigation.
Sergei Sarapultsev was the head of the Investigative Committee in the Persian Oblast since 2018. Russian agencies said Thursday his body had been found in a house on the outskirts of Perm. The officer was to leave a farewell letter in which – according to Russian media reports – “he asked God to forgive his sins, without stating the reasons for his decision.”
Attack at the university
September 20, 18-year-old Timur Bekmansurow, first-year student of the Perm State Research University he made an attempt at his own university, killing six people and injuring several dozen. Armed with a smoothbore rifle, he stormed into the building where the geology and geography departments are located. Later he moved to the chemistry department.
The perpetrator was shot by a traffic officer during arrest. He was taken to the hospital.
After the attack on the university, Alexander Bastrykin, the head of the Investigative Committee of Russia, came to Perm. He visited the university and the families of the victims, and organized a business meeting to investigate the circumstances of the attack. – During a conversation with Sarapultsev, Bastrykin, in front of his subordinates, accused him of what happened, saying that the fault was the poor work of local investigators – one of the officers told Permian media.
Novaya Gazeta recalled that the management in Moscow had objected to Sarapultsev’s work earlier. At the beginning of September, a conference was held in Perm regarding the defrauded owners of development apartments. Alexander Bastrykin was not satisfied with the investigation by local investigators at the time.
