The Russian prosecutor general’s office asked the local Supreme Court to liquidate the Memorial Association – a distinguished organization that investigates political repression and defends human rights. The prosecutor’s office said that the organization was, inter alia, “violating the constitution of the Russian Federation”. The Supreme Court is expected to hear the lawsuit on November 25.

The lawsuit itself was announced on Thursday by Memorial itself, reporting that the prosecutor’s office claims in the lawsuit that the organization violates the provisions on so-called non-governmental organizations-foreign agents. Later, the prosecutor’s office stated that Memorial “violated the constitution of the Russian Federation” as well as other legal acts. She also specified that she filed a claim for liquidation on November 8.

In a statement on its website, Memorial assured that there were no legal grounds for its liquidation. “It is a political decision to destroy the Memorial Association” – assessed the organization. The Human Rights Defense Center, which is part of the Memorial, was recognized by the authorities in 2014 as an organization “acting as a foreign agent”. The Memorial Association, which studies “white spots” in recent history and the history of repressions in the USSR – including those committed against Poles – was recognized as a “foreign agent” in 2016.

The Memorial – the full name of which is: “Memorial”, an international historical, educational, charity and human rights association – was established in the 1980s as an association of independent organizations. Also now it is made up of independent structures, 10 of which operate outside Russia.
