The Turkish daily “Daily Sabah” reported on Saturday a telephone conversation between Vladimir Putin and the Turkish president. According to the Kremlin, Recep Tayyip Erdogan assured the Russian leader of “support against the armed rebellion of mercenaries” from the Wagner Group.

The Turkish leader described the events unfolding in Russia an “attempted coup d’état”. He added that Türkiye stands ready to help resolve the situation peacefully as soon as possible.

“Erdogan has expressed his support for the Russian government’s handling of the Wagner Group mercenary revolt,” the Kremlin said in a statement quoted by the Turkish daily.

Erdogan urged his interlocutor to “use common sense”, the office of the Turkish president said.

Wagnerian revolt

On Friday, the head of the Wagner Group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, announced that troops of the regular Russian army had attacked the Wagner camp, resulting in numerous deaths. He announced that he intended to “restore justice” in the armed forces and called for no opposition to him.

Putin called the soldiers of the mercenary Wagner Group traitors and assured that the rebels would be held accountable to the law and the nationand Russia will be defended. Prigozhin declared on Saturday after Putin’s speech that the Wagner Group would not give up in the fight against the regular Russian army.

The independent Russian portal Mediazona reported on Saturday afternoon that the Wagnerians heading towards Moscow are in a straight line 340 kilometers from the Russian capital. In the following hours, this distance decreased. Some, e.g. Ukrainian media reported that the Wagnerians could appear in Moscow early in the evening.
