A Russian Su-34 bomber accidentally dropped its weapons over the city of Belgorod on the border with Ukraine on Thursday evening, the Russian Defense Ministry reported. Three people were injured. A crater with a diameter of 20 meters was created on one of the main streets of the city.

Belgorod is a peripheral city in Russialocated 40 kilometers from the border with Ukraine, about 700 kilometers south of Moscow. It is inhabited by about 400,000 people.

“On April 20, 2023, around 10:15 pm Moscow time, during the flight of the Su-34 of the Aerospace Forces over the city of Belgorod, the weapons on board were accidentally dropped,” Reuters reported, citing the Russian Defense Ministry as quoted by TASS. “The investigation is ongoing,” the statement added.

What kind of weapon was used was not specified.

A crater on one of the streets of the city

A crater with a diameter of 20 meters was created on one of the main streets of the city, the governor of the Belgorod region Vyacheslav Gladkov said on Telegram, quoted by Reuters. He added that four residential buildings and four cars were damaged. He also reported that two women were injured.

The governor announced state of emergency.
