Russia. The trial of the head of the Memorial Association, Oleg Orlov, has begun in Moscow

The trial of Oleg Orlov, an activist accused by the authorities of “repeat discrediting of the army”, has started. The Memorial Association, of which he is a co-chairman, said that Orlov had requested the inclusion of Dmitry Muratov, the editor-in-chief of Novaya Gazeta and a Nobel Peace Prize winner, in the trial as public defender.

The trial of Oleg Orlov, the co-chairman responsible for defense, began on Thursday in a Moscow court human rights and the study of Stalinist crimes of the Memorial Association.

Orlov is accused of “repeatly discrediting the army.” According to the association in Telegram, informing about the start of the trial, the criminal case against Orlov was initiated in connection with the entry on social networking sites on the Internet.

It contained a translation of an article by him, originally published by the French website Mediapart. In the text, Orlov criticized the Russian aggression against Ukraine. He faces three to five years in prison.

The Russian authorities outlaw the Memorial Association

Memorial reported that Orlov had applied for Dmitry Muratov, the editor-in-chief of Novaya Gazeta and a Nobel Peace Prize winner, to be included in the trial as public defender. Despite the objections of the prosecutor, the judge agreed, according to the organization’s Telegram.

Founded in 1987, Memorial, one of the oldest and most distinguished Russian non-governmental organizations, was recognized in December 2021 as the so-called a foreign agent and then liquidated by the Russian authorities.

In October 2022, Memorial was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize together with the head of the Belarusian Center for Human Rights Viasna Ales Bialiatski and the Ukrainian Center for Civil Liberties.
