The writer Lyudmila Petrushevskaya announced that she was renouncing the State Prize she received in 2002, which was presented to her by President Vladimir Putin. This is a reaction to the Russian authorities’ attempt to liquidate the Memorial Association, which defends human rights and documents the crimes of Stalinism.

On her Facebook profile, Ludmiła Pietruszewska recalled that she received the award for a play devoted to “those who did not return from the labor camps”. “They are taking the Memorial from me now, the memory of those shot, thrown under trucks and starving, about those who died in the cold in trucks on the way from the camp to the camp, about those who were tortured in Lubyanka and Kolyma, about those who were recently beaten in the streets, in police cars, about those who were sitting in prisons for fake, rigged criminal cases, said Pietruszewska.

She added that she was resigning from the title of the laureate of the State Prize of the Russian Federation, because it was presented to her by Putin.

The prize is awarded for scientific and technical achievements in the field of literature and art, and the winners receive it from the President of the Russian Federation during an official ceremony.
