On the night of Friday to Saturday, a plane carrying 90 tons of American weapons landed in Kiev, the US embassy in Ukraine said. This demonstrates – we read – “the uninterrupted commitment of the United States to defend Ukraine in the face of increasing Russian aggression.”
“Military aid directed to Ukraine by President Joe Biden arrived tonight. 200,000 pounds (90 tons) of weapons, including ammunition, for Ukrainian frontline defenders, the embassy said on Saturday.
The announcement emphasized that in 2021 the United States provided Ukraine with military support worth over USD 650 million, and since 2014 aid worth a total of USD 2.7 billion has been directed to the country. It added that this step testifies to “uninterrupted commitment to the defense of Ukraine in the face of increasing Russian aggression”.
The delivery of weapons was preceded by a visit by the US secretary of state on Wednesday Antony Blinken in Kiev. On Friday, the defense ministers of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia announced a plan to hand over US-made defensive weapons to Ukraine.
Also on Friday in Geneva US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met. They talked about the situation on the border between Russia and Ukraine.
Tension on the Russian-Ukrainian border
Russia is openly threatening Ukraine with aggression. It has already gathered over 120,000 soldiers at the border. The West has announced that it will respond in a decisive manner in the event of a Russian invasion of Ukraine.
