Russia not only deploys troops at the border with Ukraine, but also collects blood supplies and medical supplies to treat the wounded, reports Reuters, citing sources in the US administration. This is supposed to suggest Moscow’s readiness to attack its neighbor.
Russia gathers its forces at the border with Ukraine. According to the authorities in Kiev, about 127,000 soldiers are currently stationed at the Ukrainian border. Moreover, in January on the territory Belarus troops of the Russian armed forces began to arrive in connection with the joint military maneuvers of the Union Resolute-2022, which are scheduled for February 10-20, 2022.
Three US officials, wishing to remain anonymous, told Reuters that Russia is also stocking up on blood and medical supplies at the border with Ukraine to treat the wounded.
As the agency writes, this increases the concerns of the United States that Russia is preparing for an armed attack on Ukraine. According to Reuters, signals of stockpiling along the border are key to assessing Moscow’s willingness to invade.
The specter of a conflict with Russia
US Defense Minister Lloyd Austin said Friday the president of Russia Vladimir Putin it already has the combat capability to take action against Ukraine. The head of the Pentagon noted, however, that “there is still time and room for diplomacy”.
Russia is conditioning the de-escalation of the situation around Ukraine by returning to the end of the Atlantic Alliance enlargement policy, in particular to Ukraine, and is demanding a return to the deployment of Western troops on the borders from 1997, i.e. to the state prior to the enlargement of the Alliance to include Poland, among others.
The United States and NATO formally rejected these demands on Wednesday, proposing to negotiate reciprocal restrictions on the deployment of short- and medium-range missiles, as well as military exercises near the opposite camp.
On Friday a telephone conversation with the President of France, Emmanuel Macron Vladimir Putin emphasized that Russia wants to continue work on resolving the conflict in eastern Ukraine. The leaders agreed to continue the dialogue. Putin insisted on the current format of the talks, which connects Moscow, Kiev, Berlin and Paris. Such meeting in Normandy format political leadership was held in Paris on January 26. The next ones are scheduled for February in Berlin.
