The President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, spoke about the situation on the Polish-Belarusian border. As he announced, Brussels should talk to Minsk about the migration crisis. According to experts, the crisis on the border would not have been possible without the support of Alyaksandr Lukashenka’s regime by the Kremlin, which wants to test the resilience of the EU and NATO. The White House had previously expressed concern about the situation at the border. President Joe Biden said “Russia has been made aware of this concern.”

Vladimir Putin spoke about the migration crisis at the Polish-Belarusian border during an interview for Rossiya-1 television. – It is not a question for me why they (the EU and Belarus – ed.) Do not talk to each other. This does not apply to us, he said. He added that “he understood from his talks with Alyaksandr Lukashenka and German Chancellor Angela Merkel that they are ready to talk to each other.”

– I hope that this will happen soon and that some direct contact will be established between the European Union and the main EU countries, at least between Germany and Belarus. This is the most important thing, because immigrants try to get to Germany, first of all, said Putin.

He stated that Russia “has absolutely nothing to do” with the crisis on the Belarusian border, and that its airlines “do not transport” immigrants. “We have absolutely nothing to do with it, but they always try to pass the responsibility on to us, for whatever reason and no reason. Our airlines do not carry these people, he said. – By the way, Belavia (Belarusian lines – ed.), As Alyaksandr Lukashenka told me, does not bring them either. They order charters, there is a visa-free entry – people buy tickets and fly – added the Russian leader.

Putin said that “the migration crisis was caused by the Western countries themselves and that it had military-political and economic causes.” He also accused EU countries of not following humanitarian rules.

Putin assured that he was in favor of solving the crisis “in the interests of both Belarus and European countries, including Poland and Germany, and other countries.” He repeated that he was counting on “direct contact between the Belarusian authorities and the main EU states.”

EU and NATO resistance testing

Experts, asked by the Russian section of the Voice of America broadcasting station about the situation on Belarus’s border with EU countries, replied that the crisis on the border would not have been possible without the support of Alyaksandr Lukashenka’s regime by the Kremlin, which wants to test the resilience of the EU and NATO.

– The migration crisis occurs at the same time as Russian troops are gathering near the Ukrainian borders. This causes growing US and EU concern about what Putin might do with Ukraine. And Putin, I think, is also behind the migration situation and how Lukashenka uses migrants and refugees from the Middle East against the three countries of the European Union and NATO: mainly against Poland, largely against Lithuania, and on a slightly smaller scale against Latvia, he said radio station David Kramer, former head of Freedom House.

In his opinion, the Russian president is using the situation with migrants to force the West to resume dialogue with Lukashenka.

David Marples, a professor at the University of Alberta in Canada, believes that Lukashenka is resorting to radical measures. – It uses all the opportunities it has left against the EU. It is somewhat cornered, under heavy sanctions, and its steps to take advantage of migrants are a gesture of despair, an analyst on Voice of America said.

Patch on the “forced to dialogue” scenario

The well-known Belarusian oppositionist Paweł Latuszka said on TVN24 that “this scenario of forcing a dialogue consists in: creating a migration crisis, hybrid war, threatening with Russian nuclear weapons, recognizing Crimea as part of Russia, nuclear bombers over the skies of Belarus, Russian amphibious troops”.

– This is all a show of strength and an attempt to force the European Union to sit down at the talk table. But it is also used by Putin. Because Putin, through Lukashenka, a useful idiot, actually implements his scenario. The first is to irritate Europe, the second is to reduce the weight of Lukashenka – he assessed.

The reaction of the White House

The US President expressed his concern about the situation on the Polish-Belarusian border on Friday Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and Chief of Diplomacy Antony Blinken.

In an interview with journalists, Biden informed that comments on Minsk’s actions had been forwarded to Russia and Belarus. Harris said the US was paying “special attention” to the crisis, and the head of the State Department indicated that the US was considering using “various tools” against the Minsk regime.

The head of US diplomacy also referred to the issue of “irregular” movements of Russian troops near the border with Ukraine, expressing his concern and warning Russia against committing “a serious mistake”.
