Chinese leader Xi Jinping, who arrived in Moscow on Monday, attended an official welcome ceremony by Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday. After the ceremony, formal talks between the two politicians began. Putin and Xi also spoke the day before in the Kremlin, calling each other “dear friends.”

The leader of China Xi Jinping arrived on Monday on a state visit to Russiawhere he will stay until Wednesday. On Tuesday afternoon, Xi attended an official welcome ceremony by Vladimir Putin. The two politicians then began formal talks.

Earlier, the Chinese leader met with Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and called for further contacts between the heads of government China and Russia.

Xi Jinping had already spoken with Putin on Monday after arriving in Moscow. During the meeting in the Kremlin, the leaders called each other “dear friends.” “I know that there will be another presidential election in your country next year,” Xi said at the beginning of the meeting. – Under the strong leadership of Mr. President, Russia has made significant progress (…) I am convinced that the Russian people will continue to strongly support Mr. President – he added.

Putin said that “China has made a giant leap forward in development.” “It is of genuine interest around the world and we even envy you a little,” he said.

First visit to Putin since ICC arrest warrant

Xi is the first head of state to meet with Putin since International Criminal Court (ICC) issued a warrant for his arrest for war crimes in Ukraine.

Beijing has not condemned Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and opposes the sanctions imposed on Moscow. The Chinese authorities have declared support for peace talks and a ceasefire, but according to experts, in the current situation, it would be beneficial for Russia. The US authorities expressed concerns that China would supply Russia with weapons.
