Russian general detained for 'exceptionally large bribes'

General Valery Mumindzhanov was detained and charged with accepting “bribes of an exceptionally large size” in the amount of over 20 million rubles (about 862 thousand zlotys). This is another high-ranking Russian military officer detained. According to the media, the targets of the purges were people from the entourage of former Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and generals who “did not live up to the Kremlin's hopes.”

“Deputy Commander of the Leningrad Military District, General Valery Mumindzhanov, has been detained,” the media reported, citing the Investigative Committee. The criminal case concerns “bribes of an exceptionally large size.” According to the Investigative Committee, the soldier was supposed to have accepted bribes in the amount of over 20 million rubles (approx. PLN 862,000).

Russian investigators claim that Mumindzhanov, who previously served as head of the department of material support in the Ministry of Defense, “favored” the conclusion of contracts with companies supplying uniforms, including for participants wars in Ukraine. The contracts were worth 1.5 billion rubles.

“During the investigation, it was established that Mumindzhanov and his family own numerous real estates in Moscow and Voronezh, the value of which exceeds 120 million rubles. The legality of the acquisition of these real estates is being checked,” it was reported.

Another general

This is yet another high-ranking military official detained in recent months. In most cases, military and senior officials in the Ministry of Defense are accused of corruption.

According to the media, the target of the purges were people from the former defense minister's circle. Sergei Shoigu and generals who “did not live up to the hopes placed in them by the Kremlin.”

In late August, media reported that Russian security forces had detained the deputy to dismissed Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, Army General Pavel Popov. Popov was charged with large-scale fraud, investigators said, as quoted by the independent Russian-language website The Moscow Times.

In their opinion, between 2021 and 2024 the general responsible for the development, maintenance and operation of the Patriot park enriched himself at its expense.

In late May, the deputy chief of the general staff of the Russian army, General Vadim Shamarin, was detained on corruption charges, Moscow media reported on Thursday. As the independent website The Moscow Times noted, “the arrest of another general is taking place against the backdrop of the resignation of Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and the appointment of former deputy prime minister Andrei Belousov in his place.”
