The media reached information on the modernization of secret Russian nuclear bases. According to their findings, Russia uses western parts in its facilities, such as valves and pumps.
Key facts:
- The arrangements were presented by Dutch and German journalists.
- They claim that the Russians are building completely new bases, old bases have been razed to the ground and rebuilt from scratch.
- There is also a thread of Russia's use of European parts.
Journalists of the Danish portal Danwatch and the German newspaper “Der Spiegel” revealed details about the modernization of secret Russian nuclear bases. They based their publication on the analysis of two million pages of documentation from military tenders in Russiato which they accessed through Russian, Belarusian and Kazakh servers.
Journalists' findings
“Documents reveal how in parallel with the development of weapon systems throughout Russia, completely new objects were built, old bases were razed to the ground and rebuilt from scratch” – emphasize the authors of the study. They add that “hundreds of new barracks, watchtowers, control centers and storage buildings were erected, and kilometers of underground tunnels were dug.”
The Danwatch portal in the documents found detailed plans to build and modernize the base near the city of Jasna, where from 2019 a hypersonic Avangard glider has been stored.
The tender documentation included Descriptions of the safety systems used, including the location of seismic and radioactivity sensors, as well as cameras. You can find out about the place of staying of soldiers and storing weapons.
Experts cited by Danish and German media point out that declassification of such a detailed material can cause Russia, and in the worst case new nuclear weapons bases will be susceptible to attacks.
European parts used by Russia
Another thread of the arrangements of Danwatch and “Der Spiegel” is the use by Russia to modernize their bases of parts from Denmarkincluding valves, pumps and insulation, probably produced by Russian branches of Danish companies. Danfoss companies (manufacturer of components and technological solutions for refrigeration and air conditioning, heating, water distribution and working machines) and Grundfos (the world's largest pump manufacturer) sold their shares in Russia in Russia in 2022, but the manufacturer of rockwool insulation has four more factories. All three companies denied that their parts were used in military facilities, they also claim that they did not violate any sanctions.
According to documents for the construction of the base in Jasne, products were ordered and delivered from large companies from Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands and Switzerland.
