The world must show Lukashenka and Putin that it will not succumb to nuclear blackmail – this is the first reaction of the leader of the Belarusian opposition, Sviatlana Cichanouska, to the information that Russian tactical nuclear weapons are to appear in Belarus any day. Some of the missiles will be only 100 kilometers from the Polish border.

Alyaksandr Lukashenka in an interview with Russian state television says that nuclear weapons from Russia will arrive in Belarus “within days”. The dictator claims that it was he who asked the Kremlin for such a move, and that the weapons are only for deterrence. “No one has ever been at war with a nuclear weapons state, and we have received rockets and bombs from Russia that are three times more powerful than those dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki,” Lukashenko said. Tactical nuclear weapons are to be delivered to Belarus – these are smaller short-range missiles, capable of carrying charges at a distance of up to 500 kilometers. According to experts from the Association of American Scientists – the warheads can be delivered to the air base in the city of Lida, located about 100 kilometers from the Polish border.

Lukashenko says the weapons will end up in several refurbished Soviet-era warehouses. – Weapons will be stored in several places. We have many warehouses where we can keep it. We have already renewed 5-6 of them, and we intend to do so with all of them. Thanks to this, we will not keep these weapons in one place – explains the Belarusian dictator.

Belarus is the first country after the collapse of the USSR to which the Kremlin sends its nuclear weapons. According to Kremlin propaganda, this is a response to NATO enlargement. This move is intended to give the West less time to react to a possible nuclear attack. Although de facto, little will change, because Russia already has nuclear warheads on the Polish border – in the Królewiec District.

End of independence?

Putin’s movement, on the other hand, is of great political importance – the Belarusian opposition even says that this is the end of independent Belarus. Swiatłana Cichanouska in an interview with TVN24 BiS claims that this is the next stage of subordinating Belarus to the Kremlin. – The permanent presence of Russian troops in Belarus will now be “necessary”, because we will now have nuclear weapons. It will take years to get rid of these weapons. I think that was Russia’s strategic goal to occupy Belarus under the guise of deploying nuclear weapons. Because this is what is happening – said Swiatłana Cichanouska, the leader of the Belarusian opposition.

When Putin announced the sending of nuclear weapons to Belarus, he said that Lukashenka would not have a red button at his disposal. The Belarusian dictator, however, has a separate narrative for internal use. – He actually denies the previous words of Putin, Peskov, Shoigu that he will not have the right to decide on the use of nuclear weapons. He says the opposite, that “I will decide” or “I will decide together with Putin”. That we will even be ready to use nuclear weapons if, for example, the NATO army goes through Rzeszów to Ukraine, if aggression is against Belarus – explains Paweł Łatuszka, a Belarusian oppositionistdeputy head of the transitional government of Belarus.

At a meeting with Kremlin propagandists, Aleksandr Lukashenka referred to the rumors about his serious illness. He stated that he is not dying, he is healthy, but admitted that he is still struggling with a viral infection, from which he is expected to recover in a few weeks.
