Five ships of the Russian navy are under surveillance by the Portuguese military due to their appearance in waters under the country's jurisdiction, the Portuguese Navy said on Friday. She added that one of the units being tracked is a submarine.
According to a statement from the Navy Command Portugal Russian ships have remained near the country's shores since Tuesday, heading towards the Mediterranean Sea.
The units remaining in waters under Portuguese jurisdiction include three logistic support units and a submarine.
Before Christmas, the Portuguese army said it monitored the appearance of four ships of the Russian navy on the country's coast via frigates and a helicopter. They all headed to Syria.
