The Chinese government said that its envoy would participate in Saudi Arabia in peace talks in Ukraine. The head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Dmytro Kuleba assessed that such news was a “super breakthrough”. He said that Russia would “go crazy” because of the presence of a Chinese representative at the meeting.
On Friday, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the special envoy of the PRC government for Eurasian affairs, Li Hui, will participate in Saudi Arabia in peace talks on the Ukraine. Representatives from around 40 countries will meet in Jeddah this weekend to discuss Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Dmytro Kuleba on the “super breakthrough”
The head of Ukrainian diplomacy referred to this information Dmytro Kuleba.
– We want China to participate in the summit of the peace formula. The news that China is sending Li Hui to Jeddah is a great breakthrough, Kuleba said, quoted by the Interfax-Ukraine news agency. He said that Russia would “go crazy” because of the presence of a representative of the Chinese government at the meeting.
He added that she played an important role in this decision Saudi Arabia and a conversation between President Volodymyr Zelensky and the heir to the throne of Saudi Arabia, Prince Muhammad ibn Salman. “Saudi Arabia has engaged China and this is a historic victory,” the Ukrainian minister said.
“One of the main goals of this round of negotiations will be to finally establish a common understanding of what the 10 points of President Zelensky’s peace plan are about,” Ihor Zhovkva, deputy head of the Ukrainian president’s office, told Reuters earlier.
Ukrainian peace formula
The 10-point Ukrainian peace formula provides for the punishment of those responsible for war crimes, the withdrawal of all Russian troops from Ukrainian territory, the restoration of the country’s territorial integrity, and the release of all prisoners of war and deportees. The plan also includes a postulate to prevent the destruction of the natural environment, as well as energy, food and nuclear security. Zelensky presented this formula on November 15, 2022 during a virtual speech to leaders G20.
Representatives of the authorities of Western countries expressed concerns that the 10-point initiative would have a limited impact on Russia in the absence of China’s participation. China was invited to the previous round of negotiations in Copenhagen in June, but was not present.
A senior European Commission official told Reuters on Thursday that he believed it was crucial that China was also at the negotiating table. Zhovkva, in turn, informed that the Chinese ambassador to Ukraine took part in meetings devoted to the peace initiative. He added that Kiev was working on Beijing’s participation in the talks in Jeddah.
