Russia may have lost up to half of its operational tanks during the military invasion of Ukraine, US television CNN reported, citing the assessment of analysts from the Oryx group. They estimate that the Russian army lost a thousand tanks during the war, 544 tanks of this type were captured by Ukrainian forces, 79 tanks were damaged and 65 were abandoned.

The figures listed do not include losses that Oryx was unable to confirm. He quotes group analyst Jakub Janowski, who reminds that Russia launched an armed invasion Ukraine with about 3,000 serviceable tanks at its disposal.

– So there is a high probability that she lost half of these vehicles – said Janowski. In his opinion, before the invasion of Ukraine, Russia had about 4,000 in reserve. tanks.

Experts, quoted by CNN, say that before the war, Russian armored vehicles were poorly maintained and some tanks in storage may have been taken apart to make those sent to the front operational.

“On paper, Russia still has a lot of tanks, but many of them have not been properly stored,” Janowski said, adding that the Russians may therefore have problems putting them back into operation.

Oryx estimates that Ukraine lost 459 tanks during the military invasion.

Previously, Janowski told CNN that producing new tanks in Russia would be difficult. “Due to the sanctions, they may have to replace sensors and electronics with cheaper alternatives – and the number they can produce in the near future is only a fraction of what they lose,” the analyst said.
