The situation in Ukraine has deteriorated dramatically – said Professor Katarzyna Pisarska from the Warsaw School of Economics in “Fakty po Faktach” on TVN24. She added that currently there is no possibility for the Ukrainian side to reach an agreement with Russia because the aggressors “are interested in destroying the Ukrainian nation.” – They feel that they are fighting for the survival of the nation. And it is very difficult to make any compromise with this, she emphasized.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Saturday that possible talks with Russia “are possible provided that Ukraine is not alone and is strong.” – We should do everything to end the war diplomatically next year – he added.

– My friends fall asleep every day with their small children, they are wondering whether to sleep in the bathroom today, or maybe in bed normally, or maybe in the corridor, where it will be safer – she added.

She also said that “the Russians want not only to intimidate people, but also to break them, because it is a certain psychological torture.” – If the editor, or any of us, had to get up three or four times at night, every night, for many weeks, we know that we cannot function normally – she said to the host Piotr KraÅ›ka.

Professor Pisarska: Russia wants to destroy the Ukrainian nation

The expert said that on the Ukrainian side “currently there is no possibility of reaching an agreement with Russia, because Russia is not about territory, Russia is not about securing Crimea, Russia is not about securing Donbas, Russia is about destroying the Ukrainian nation or decimating it.” in such a way that it will become some small nation, (…) which will be essentially meaningless, and Kiev, Odessa and all the most important centers will belong to Russia and Russia will govern them.”

Professor Pisarska said that “this war for Ukrainians actually started in 2014.” – They have been in this war for ten years, hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians have died, let's be honest, they feel that they are fighting for the survival of the nation. And it is very difficult to make any compromise with this, because they understand that it is not about the territory, it is about them as a nation, she emphasized.

– Ukrainians are convinced that they do not want and are not ready to surrender today. And they are convinced that what they hear and what is coming from Washington at the moment, i.e. various ideas of de facto recognition of Russian territorial annexation, will only inflame Russian appetite – continued the representative of the SGH. She added that “if, however, the Americans are able to provide credible security guarantees, and NATO's Article 5 is such a security guarantee, I can imagine that some (peace – ed.) talks could begin.”
