The trial of Vladimir Kara-Murza, a prominent Russian opposition activist, has begun in a Russian court on charges of high treason and spreading “false information” about Russia’s war with Ukraine, AP reports.

Vladimir Kara-Murza has been in custody since April 2022 on charges of disseminating “untrue information” about the Russian armed forces. in a March 15 speech last year in the Arizona House of Representatives, in which he condemned Russia’s military actions in Ukraine. Prosecutors have now extended the charge to include high treason.

As the lawyer of the 41-year-old Kara-Murza said, the oppositionist is accused of treason for criticizing the Russian authorities in public speeches abroad. “As a true Russian patriot, he is accused of high treason for his tireless fight for a Russia without Putin,” his wife Yevgenia tweeted.
