Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov “The US and its NATO allies risk a direct confrontation between the nuclear powers by supplying weapons to Ukraine,” Reuters reported, quoting an interview with the Russian Foreign Minister’s The International Affairs magazine. Lavrov also stated that “the possession of nuclear weapons is the only possible response to external security threats to our country.”
“We believe that such a development of the situation should be prevented. That is why we must remind about the high military and political risk and send restrained signals to our opponents,” Lavrov quoted Reuters as saying.
The agency recalled that US President Joe Biden recently assessed that the threat of Russia using tactical nuclear weapons in connection with the conflict with Ukraine “is real”. By contrast, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said this week that the Alliance had not detected any changes in Russia’s nuclear forces.
