“Russia has launched a systematic effort to force residents of the occupied territories of Ukraine to accept Russian citizenship as part of its power consolidation program. Residents of the Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhia regions are subject to threats, intimidation, restrictions on humanitarian aid and basic needs, and possible detention and deportation – all in order to force them to become Russian citizens,” the Yale University Conflict Observatory in Ukraine, based on information from open sources, published on Wednesday.

According to the authors, the actions and tactics used by Russia make it impossible for the inhabitants to survive without accepting Russian citizenship. Parents of children who refuse a Russian passport are to be in a particularly difficult situation. They have limited access to benefits and humanitarian aid, and some of them are threatened with deprivation of parental rights and deportation to Russia. Russian officials also allegedly used the flooding caused by the demolition of the dam in Nowa Kakhovka to force residents to accept a passport, making it a condition for receiving aid.

Team leader Nathaniel Raymond told CNN that Russia’s actions are “classic war crimes”. Ukraine, Raymond said.
