The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) said on Sunday that it had finally established the identity of a Ukrainian prisoner of war who was shot dead by the Russians for shouting “Glory to Ukraine!”. It is Oleksandr Macijewski, a soldier of the territorial defense. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that he had posthumously honored Macijewski with the title of Hero of Ukraine.

“The SBU investigators established that the Ukrainian military man shot after the words ‘Glory Ukraine!’ was a sniper of the 163rd battalion of the 119th independent territorial defense brigade of the Chernihiv region, Oleksandr Maciyevsky, the SBU reported in a statement.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky announced that he had honored Macijewski posthumously with the title of Hero of Ukraine. In a video speech, he said that this soldier “will be known by all Ukrainians and he will be remembered forever – for his courage, for his faith in Ukraine, for his ‘Glory to Ukraine'”.

The SBU confirmed the identity

As explained by the SBU, the identity of the deceased was confirmed in the course of the investigation. Photographic materials and video recordings were examined, and the relatives and comrades-in-arms of the killed prisoner were interviewed. “In addition, the SBU received the result of a forensic portrait examination, which confirmed that the military man in the recording is Oleksandr Macijewski,” the service statement reads.

Earlier, after the recording was published, the press service of one of the Ukrainian army brigades stated that the prisoner murdered by the Russians was most likely Tymofiej Shadura, who fought at Bakhmut and was declared missing on February 3.

The SBU takes steps to establish the identity of the prisoner’s killers

Macijewski, according to the SBU, was killed on December 30, 2022. At the end of December, he was declared missing when he disappeared near the village of Krasna Hora in the Donetsk region. The body was handed over to his relatives in February 2023. The soldier was mobilized in March 2022. The SBU did not disclose his age.

The SBU is taking steps to establish the identity of the prisoner’s killers, the message published on Sunday on the Telegram service added. “We will do everything to make them suffer the punishment they deserve,” said the head of the SBU, Vasyl Maluk.

A video recording of the prisoner’s execution appeared on the Internet earlier this week. The recording shows a Ukrainian prisoner of war. When he says the words “Glory to Ukraine”, a Russian military officer, invisible in the frame, shoots him with a machine gun with the words “Die, s…”. The Ukrainian authorities condemned this war crime committed by the Russians by launching their own proceedings and also by calling International Criminal Court to launch an investigation.
