The Air Operations Center recorded an object in Polish airspace that flew in from the direction of Belarus. It is probably an observation balloon, the Ministry of Defense informed on Saturday morning. Currently, a search is being carried out in the vicinity of Rypin in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship, involving a helicopter, a drone and ground groups from the Territorial Defense Forces, the press officer of the Operational Command of the Armed Forces said.

Ministry of National Defence announced on Saturday on Twitter. “The Air Operations Center noted the appearance of an object in Polish airspace that flew in from the direction Belarus. According to COP information, it is probably an observation balloon. Radar contact was lost near Rypin, the ministry said.

As the ministry reported, “the Operational Commander decided to deploy the Territorial Defense Forces on duty to search for the object.”

Captain Ewa Złotnicka, press officer of the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces, reported that “on Friday, May 12, around 8:30 p.m. near Białowieża, a flying object flew into Polish airspace from Belarus.” – It was observed while still in the airspace of Belarus. After crossing the border, radar monitoring was carried out, she added.

The press officer added that “when the object appeared in Polish airspace, all procedures applicable in such cases were launched.” – The MiG-29 duty pair was picked up, then the F-16 – she said.

– Half an hour after midnight, this object ceased to be visible to our reconnaissance means. It took place in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship near the town of Rypin, she informed.

– At 5 am, the Operational Command of the Armed Forces Branches started activating the forces that can be used to search for this type of object. A task has been set for the duty SAR helicopter and it is currently conducting search tasks in the air over the area – said the captain.

She added that an unmanned aerial vehicle has also been conducting searches in the airspace since 8 am, and before 8 am the search was started by a ground search group from the Territorial Defense Forces launched by the Operational Commander.

– Also from around 5.30 am on the scene there are police patrols. In addition, a task was set to activate another reinforcement sub-unit from the Territorial Defense Forces as part of ground search support, she said.

WOT spokesman: a ground search and rescue team has been launched

Press officer WOT Major Witold Sura said in an interview with TVN24 that “in the morning, the ground search and rescue team of the 8th Kuyavian-Pomeranian Territorial Defense Brigade was directed to the area of ​​operation and at that moment it was subordinated to the Operational Command of the Armed Forces and all tasks, coordination of this team is in the hands of the Operational Command.

– This is a team that consists of specialists, but we are prepared to allocate larger forces at the decision of the Operational Command, if necessary – he said, adding that the team consists of about 10 soldiers.

The duty officer from the Provincial Headquarters of the State Fire Service in Toruń told PAP that firefighters know about this incident. – I confirm that we have information about such a balloon in the airspace, which was lost from radars near Rypin. Everything happened at night. At the moment, the Fire Brigade has not been included in field operations, he added.
