On the S11 route between Swadzim and Dąbrowa (Greater Poland Voivodeship), sectional speed measurement has been operating for several weeks. Data for the first month indicate that the system recorded over 4.5 thousand cases of violations of regulations. According to the Chief Road Transport Inspectorate, sectional measurement is a very effective tool in the fight against road pirates. Another 43 places have been selected where this system will also appear. Two of them will be located in Greater Poland.

On the S11 section between Swadzim near Poznań and Dąbrowa, sectional speed measurement was introduced on August 9. The system consists of cameras placed at the beginning and end of the supervised section. The devices record cars, the speed at which they travel and the time they travel.

The epoznan.pl website published data on the number of speeding violations in this place. It turned out that within the first month (from August 9 to September 9) the system has registered 4.5 thousand traffic violations.

The TVN24 reporter asked the Chief Road Transport Inspectorate what the overall data on this section looks like, so from August 9 to October. – So far, a sectional speed measurement on the S11 near Poznań has been recorded over 8.5 thousand cases of exceeding the speed limit – says TVN24 Wojciech Król, press spokesman of the Chief Inspectorate of Road Transport.

The scale of violations varies. On average, drivers exceeded the speed limit on S11 by about 20 kilometers per hour. But as the GITD spokesman notes, there are also cases of gross offenses. – We have an example of a Porsche driver who exceeded the speed limit there by as much as 67 kilometers per hour – he adds.

In each case, the amount of the fine results from the fine list. The maximum amount is PLN 2.5 thousand.

The most effective tool?

– For many years, excessive speed has been the leading cause of road accidents in Poland. The laws of physics cannot be cheated. The faster we go, the less control we have over our car. Especially in crisis situations, the superintendent told Faktom TVN. Maciej Święcichowski from the press office of the Greater Poland Police.

Therefore, it seems that sectional speed measurement is one of the most effective tools in the fight against road pirates. – It has a definite advantage over stationary measurement because it influences the driver's behavior on a longer section of the road. The driver drives at the speed limit for longer, which directly affects road safety – explains Król.

They selected 43 new places

The first sectional speed measurement appeared in Poland on November 19, 2015. After 9 years, there are 50 of them, and soon there will be 70. At the beginning of September, the Road Transport Inspectorate announced a tender for further systems.

The installation of 128 devices will cost money over PLN 161 millionof which over PLN 131 million will come from the National Reconstruction Plan. According to the Center for Automatic Road Traffic Supervision (CANARD), the project includes the purchase and installation of 128 stationary recording devices used to record road traffic offenses. This number – as reported by CANARD – is necessary to achieve the value of one of the milestones indicated in the National Reconstruction Plan.

As part of the expansion of the system, it is planned to install 43 devices for section speed measurement, 70 point speed measurement devices, 10 devices for monitoring red light crossings at intersections and five devices for monitoring red light crossings at railway crossings. – The tender is currently underway, after its completion and signing of the contract, the contractor will have 76 weeks to implement it, i.e. until mid-2026 – says Król.

GITD has already presented a list of places where new systems will appear. – Together with the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways, which manages traffic on national roads, and the police, we have selected the most sensitive and dangerous places – explains the GITD spokesman.

As for Greater Poland, new systems are planned on A2 between the Koło and Dąbie junctions and on S5 between the Poznań Zachód and Stęszew junctions.
