The competition for the title of the first racket in the world between Iga Świątek and Aryna Sabalenka has been going on for many months. For the first time, a Pole took the lead in the WTA ranking on April 4, 2022. After 75 weeks, she was dethroned by a Belarusian. However, the 26-year-old's joy did not last long, because our compatriot won the 2023 WTA Finals and returned to the top of the rankings. But the last few weeks have been difficult for Świątek.
Not only did she break up with coach Tomasz Wiktorowski, she also withdrew from three tournaments in a row. Sabalenka benefited from the Polish woman's absence and significantly reduced her loss, and on Monday she quite unexpectedly became the leader of the WTA ranking. Unexpectedly, because this change was supposed to take place next week at the earliest, but the women's tennis organization surprised the fans.
Aryna Sabalenka's partner supported his beloved. A telling entry after the changes at the top of the WTA ranking
The Belarusian herself reacted to the change in the ranking. “Number one… Let's see for how long this time,” she joked. Her chosen one also spoke on the matter. We are talking about Georgios Frangulis, with whom Sabalenka has been in a relationship for several months.
He did not spare his partner affection. He published on InstaStory, among others: screenshot of the latest ranking, with Sabalenka at the top. He also added a very eloquent description. He did not hide his pride in his beloved's success. “Number one in my heart and number one in the world. (Fuck, I'm romantic). You are the best meu amor [moja miłość, tłum.]”- we read.
The WTA Finals are the last and only chance this season for Świątek to dethrone Sabalenka
Now before Sabalenka's WTA Finals, the last tournament of this season. She will try to do her best there and finish the event higher than Świątek to maintain the lead in the WTA ranking. We will find out in just over two weeks whether this will happen. The tournament in Riyadh will take place from November 2 to 9.
It will also be the first event for our compatriot under the supervision of a new coach. On Thursday, Świątek announced that Wiktorowski would be replaced by Wim Fissette, former coach of, among others, Angelique Kerber or Naomi Osaki. He won Grand Slam titles with each of them. We can only believe that it will help Poland regain the title of the first rocket in the world as quickly as possible.
