Residents of Sri Lanka have been struggling with heavy rains and floods since the weekend. Three people died and several thousand were evacuated. In the country's capital, Colombo, all schools were closed.

As the Sri Lankan authorities announced on Monday, three people drowned and nearly seven thousand were evacuated as a result of heavy rainfall over the weekend. All schools in the capital, Colombo, were closed.

The water reached the roofs

According to the Sri Lankan crisis management center, approximately 134,000 people felt the effects of the flood. Heavy downpours damaged 240 houses and flooded many roads and fields. In some regions of the island country, the water reached the roofs of houses and shops.

Local television stations showed reports from the flooded suburbs of Colombo.

Since May, Sri Lankans have been struggling with difficult weather conditions, mainly caused by monsoon rains.
