Sejm for a bill expanding the group of people entitled to free medicines

On Thursday, the Sejm passed an act extending the group of people entitled to free medicines to include children under 18 and seniors over 65. After the changes, free medicines are to be available to around 16 million people.

438 deputies voted for the draft act amending the act on health care services financed from public funds and the act on reimbursement of medicines, foodstuffs for particular nutritional uses and medical devices. 12 people were against. Two people abstained from voting.

More people will get access to free medicines

The act extends the “Medicines for seniors 75 plus” program to include a group of people up to 18 and over 65 years of age. About 4 million seniors benefited from the program of free reimbursed drugs. From September 2016 to the end of 2022, seniors saved a total of over PLN 4.3 billion in pharmacies, according to government data. After the change – according to the government – the program will be available to approx. 16 million people, including children, youth and seniors. In addition to expanding the age group of people entitled to free medicines, the list of medicines from the 75 plus Program will be extended from over 2,000. up to 4 thousand position. The catalog of free products will be expanded and announced in the reimbursement notice, separately for seniors over 65 and children and young people up to 18 years of age. The list of drugs will be successively expanded.

Current program cost 75+

Since 2016, the 75 plus program has cost PLN 4.5 billion. In 2022, nearly PLN 800 million was spent for this purpose. The government will allocate an additional PLN 1.6 billion to extend the programme. In total, it will be PLN 2.4 billion. Thanks to the new solution, approx. 11.5 million more people will be able to benefit from the free medication program, including approx. 7 million children and teenagers. The new regulations are to enter into force on the day following the date of publication in the Journal of Laws.
