“Anton Macierewicz’s subcommittee has already spent over PLN 31 million. The latest data from the Ministry of National Defence,” Krzysztof Brejza, a senator of the Civic Platform, wrote on Twitter on Tuesday. He attached a letter to the entry, which he received from the Ministry of National Defense.
“Replying to the request of May 15, 2023, I kindly inform you that the budget expenditures incurred by the Ministry of National Defense for the functioning of the Aircraft Accident Reinvestigation Subcommittee in the period from its establishment to May 15, 2023 amounted to PLN 31,121,974.32” – reported the Operations Center Minister of National Defence.
Rising costs of the Smolensk subcommittee
The senator also presented a letter he received on December 23, 2021, which indicated the expenses for the Smolensk subcommittee from the beginning of its creation until February 24, 2021. At that time, it was indicated that Antoni Macierewicz’s subcommittee cost PLN 22.6 million.
“By February 2021, they spent PLN 22 million. It follows that they spent PLN 9 million in the last 2 years” – noted Krzysztof Brejza.
Subcommittee for re-investigation the Smolensk disaster was established in February 2016 by the then Minister of National Defense Antoni Macierewicz, who before the United Right took power, headed a PiS deputies parliamentary team for the Tu-154M plane crash near Smolensk. After resigning from this position in 2018, Macierewicz became the chairman of the subcommittee.
Senator Krzysztof Brejza learned the costs of the subcommittee as a result of winning a court case. He applied for information on the costs of the subcommittee at the end of February 2021. The Provincial Administrative Court in Warsaw, by decision of September 30, 2021 in the case of inactivity of the Ministry of National Defense, decided that the Ministry of Defense should disclose the information requested by the senator.
Brejza in November 2021 showed the court’s verdict. We learn from it that the inaction of the head of the defense ministry Mariusz Blaszczak “had taken place in gross violation of the law.” The Ministry of National Defense was required to disclose the requested information within two weeks.
The disaster near Smolensk
The investigation of the Smolensk crash in Poland was carried out by the State Aviation Accident Investigation Commission, headed by the then head of the MIA George Miller. Her report was published in July 2011. No single, specific cause was indicated, nor were the names of the culprits.
In the final conclusions of the report, experts indicated that the cause of the accident was “descent below the minimum descent altitude, with excessive descent speed, in atmospheric conditions preventing visual contact with the ground and late start of the go-around procedure. This led to a collision with a terrain obstacle, detachment of a fragment the left wing together with the aileron, and consequently to the loss of controllability of the aircraft and collision with the ground”.
