On Wednesday, several hundred demonstrators protested in Belgrade against the policy of the Serbian authorities towards neighboring Kosovo. Some of the demonstrators were wearing the letter “Z” – a symbol of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, as well as the markings of the Wagner Group. The protests were organized by the Narodowe Patrole organization, whose leader publicly admits to having links with the Wagnerians.

– No member of the Serbian Progressive Party (the ruling party of President Alexander Vucic – ed.) can call himself a Serb anymore. I swear to you that we are ready to do much more than just organize protests,” Damjan Knežević, the leader of the National Patrols, warned on Wednesday evening. He added that from the so-called of the Franco-German plan prefers a “Russian solution to the Kosovo problem”.

Demonstrators in the center of the Serbian capital called for Serbian-Russian unity and opposed the continuation of talks with the Kosovo authorities. In November 2022, Knežević visited the center of the Wagner Group in St. Petersburg, after which he admitted in an interview with the Russian media that “many of his friends will be proud to be in contact with a group that enjoys Serbia exceptionally popular.”

The National Patrols were included in the list of entities against which criminal charges were brought against the prosecutor’s office in Belgrade in January this year regarding the recruitment of Serbian volunteers for the war against Ukraine. The charges were dropped after four days without initiating proceedings, said the lawyer who brought them, Czedomir Stojkovic.

A few hours before the beginning of Wednesday’s protests, Serbia’s interior ministry announced the detainment of two armed people planning to take part in the demonstration.
