Saturday's protest was interrupted ahead of time after a few incidents, after which the organizers announced that “this is no longer a student protest” and called the gathered to return home. Aleksandar Vuczić admitted that he understood the message of protests. – I am proud of the fact that 99 percent of protesting students did not want incidents – said President Vuczić. In his opinion, the protest was characterized by “huge negative energy and rage towards the authorities.” The Serbian leader at the same time expressed satisfaction with the fact that during the demonstration there were no “deaths or severe injuries”.

The president added that 56 people were injured on Saturday, but no one is in a life -threatening state.

– 22 people suspected of vandalism, attacks on the police and other people were detained – he said.

Protests in Serbia

The Archives of Public Assemblies, an organization dealing in Serbia's study of mass assemblies, estimated on Saturday at night that from 275 to 325,000 people participated in the protest, which makes him the most numerous in Serbia's history. According to the police, over 107,000 people participated in the demonstration.

The outbreak of protests in Serbia occurred after a construction disaster at the railway station in Nowy Sad of November 1 last year.
