Tens of thousands of people took part in a demonstration in Belgrade on Friday. Protesters, holding a banner reading “Serbia Against Violence”, blocked traffic on Belgrade’s most important bridge.

It was another mass demonstration in the capital this week Serbia. The demonstrations are the result of two shootings in which 17 people, including eight children, were killed in one of the schools in the first days of May.

As they passed government buildings, demonstrators chanted slogans aimed at President Aleksandar Vucic, whom they blame for creating divisions, using hate speech and supporting intolerance.

Accusations of “exploitation of tragedy”

The protesters then blocked the Sava bridge. The website of the pro-government newspaper Novosti wrote that “hooligans blocked the bridge” and President Vucic accused the opposition and protesters of “exploiting the tragedy” and “persecuting citizens”.

In the hands of Serbian civilians there are a lot of firearms, often dating back to the wars in the Balkans in the 1990s, the AP agency noted. After the shootings in May, a one-month amnesty was announced for those who wanted to get rid of illegal weapons and ammunition. Authorities say 9,000 have been delivered so far.
