This year, the so-called Shanghai list – a ranking of 1,000 top-rated universities in the world – includes 9 Polish institutions. The ranking is prepared annually by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
The list of Academic Ranking of World Universities is topped by American universities: Harvard, Stanford and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Britain’s Cambridge and Oxford are ranked fourth and seventh. In the world top twenty, apart from American and British universities, only the French Paris-Saclay University and the Swiss ETH Zurich were included. Among Asian universities, Tsinghua University took first place, and two Chinese universities appeared in the top 100 for the first time: Central South University and Nanjing University.
Polish universities on the Shanghai list
Among Polish universities, the Jagiellonian University and the University of Warsaw received the highest ratings, but they are only in the fifth hundred of the world’s best institutions (range 401-500). Apart from them, this year’s TOP 1000 list also includes the Medical University of Wrocław and the AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków (range 801-900).
Behind them, in the last hundred of the ranking, are the Adam Mickiewicz University, the Gdańsk University of Technology and the Warsaw University of Technology, the Nicolaus Copernicus University and the Warsaw Medical Academy.
Rules for selecting universities to the list
The ranking is prepared by Shanghai Ranking Consultancy at Jiao Tong University. It is based on criteria that include the number of alumni and staff who have won Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals in mathematics. The number of articles and papers included in selected citation indices (Science Citation Index – Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index) is taken into account. The Shanghai Jiao Tong University itself was ranked 46th in this year’s ranking.
