Turkey's highest court of appeals has upheld a lower court's decision that found a woman guilty of divorce for, among other reasons, not calling her in-laws “Mom” and “Dad.” The woman blamed her husband for neglecting her and the children and sending aggressive messages.

The man filed for divorce, accusing his wife of not showing enough respect to his parents, not calling them “mom” and “dad”, putting pressure on him and showing jealousy, reported the independent Turkish portal Duvar. According to the man, this attitude destroyed their marriage.

The woman rejected these allegations and accused her husband of, among other things, neglecting her and the children, sending aggressive messages. She turned to the court for a divorce and compensation.

When ruling on the divorce, the court found that the entire blame lay with the woman for not calling her in-laws “Mom” and “Dad”, for being cold towards them, for showing too much jealousy towards her husband and for leaving home.

The woman appealed the decision to another local court, which ruled that not calling her in-laws “mother” and “father” was not a serious enough offense to destroy the marriage. The court said both parties were at fault.

However, the highest court of appeal upheld the first court's decision and assessed that the woman “was significantly at fault for not calling her in-laws 'Mom' and 'Dad.'” The court found, taking into account other misconducts she had been accused of, that “the woman was fully to blame for the divorce.”
