Fate smiled upon a seagull living in Dubrovnik when Violeta Kuštro crossed her path. She helped the injured and hungry bird to an animal sanctuary.

As Croatian media write, the story of a certain seagull from Dubrovnik is very sad, but with a happy ending. The bird first injured its wing. The wound was so serious that it could not fly. Moreover, as local media report, one night it was scared by tourists. The terrified animal climbed high, seaside cliffs and did not come down for three days.

– The seagull was so scared that it spent three days on the rocks. I don't know how long it took to climb up. We tried to catch it, but at first we couldn't – said Violeta Kuštro. – But an empty stomach gives you courage – said the woman. She added that she lured the hungry bird with a can of fish. When it came down from the rocks, her colleague caught it and put it in a box.

Fight for the bird's life

As Violeta said, the bird had an injured wing and could not fly. – I wanted to help it, so first I called the vets in Dubrovnik. They told me that the only thing I could do was to take it away and euthanize it. Then I called the city guards and they told me that they could kill the bird to end its suffering – Violeta said.

The woman did not give up and tried to save the seagull at all costs. As she said, she finally received help from the employees of the Zagreb Zoo. However, this animal sanctuary was over 600 kilometers away from Dubrovnik. Traveling with the injured bird by car would be too long and tiring, so they decided to transport it by plane. – The seagull came to us with Croatia Airlines – said Jadranko Boras, a veterinarian at the Zagreb Zoo.

– If the seagull had stayed in Dubrovnik, its chances of survival would have been relatively slim. It can't fly, so it's hard for it to get food, and it's hard for it to escape dogs or cats, Boras added. The seagull is now under the care of employees at the Zagreb Zoo.
