BEIRUT — An unknown gunman opened hearth outdoors the U.S. embassy in Beirut late Wednesday evening.

Embassy spokesperson Jake Nelson mentioned in a press release that “small arms hearth was reported within the neighborhood of the doorway” of the sprawling — and closely fortified — compound within the suburb of Awkar.

“There have been no accidents, and our facility is secure,” he mentioned. “We’re in shut contact with host nation regulation enforcement authorities.”

Earlier this 12 months marked the fortieth anniversary of a lethal bombing assault on the U.S. embassy in Beirut on April 18. U.S. officers blame the assault, which killed 63 individuals, on the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.

Following that assault, the embassy was moved from central Beirut to the Christian suburb of Awkar, north of the capital. One other bomb assault struck the brand new location on Sept. 20. 1984.

In recent times there have been no reported assaults on the embassy.
