Heavy rains hit Sicily on Friday, causing disruption in the eastern part of the island. In the town of Mineo, the wet ground slipped, taking part of the cemetery with it. Roads on the island were blocked by fallen trees and some families were trapped in their homes.

Heavy rainfall continued in Sicily from Wednesday to Friday. It was especially dangerous in the eastern part of the island, where floods and landslides occurred.

Destruction in the cemetery

On Friday, part of a cemetery in Mineo, near the city of Catania, collapsed. The downpours caused a landslide that carried away several graves.

– Our city is almost isolated. We are threatened with a lack of water due to a broken well, there is no contact with many houses – said Giuseppe Mistretta, the mayor of Mineo. – An area that is difficult to reach has collapsed in the cemetery. For now, we must think of the living, not the dead.

Between Thursday and Friday, 450 fire brigade interventions were carried out in Sicily. In the city of Ragusa, firefighters rescued a woman who was stuck in a broken down car. A tree also fell on a car in Palermo, but the driver and passenger were unhurt. Many roads were blocked by fallen trees and there were power outages in places.
