Monitoring in the Sicilian port of Porticello captured the moment when the luxury yacht Bayesian sank due to violent weather at sea. The footage shows the ship's lights disappearing in the raging storm. There were 22 people on board, 15 of whom were saved. For over a day, services have been conducting a search and rescue operation.
The 56-metre, British-flagged luxury yacht Bayesian sank off the coast of Palermo in Sicily on Monday, following a tornado at sea in the early hours of Monday morning.
The moment of sinking on the recording
On Tuesday, Reuters released a surveillance video taken in the Sicilian port of Porticello. It showed the violent weather there and, in the distance, the lights of a ship flashing on the sea surface. At one point, the object visible in the video disappears. There are also no lights visible on the water.
Some people were saved
On Sunday, 15 of the 22 people on board were rescued. The body of one person was also found. Six are still missing. The search and rescue operation is ongoing, but – as the services emphasize – it is extremely difficult.
On Tuesday, the BBC reported that the body of one of the passengers found the day before was probably (the services have not yet officially confirmed this information) belongs to Recald Thomasa Canadian-Antiguan cook who worked on board.
