Compared to 2021, there was an increase in both the number of days of sickness absence and the number of medical certificates – informed the Social Insurance Institution in the analysis “Sickness absence in 2022”. The analysis of the Social Insurance Institution “Sickness absence in 2022” shows that in 2022, 27 million medical certificates on temporary incapacity for work were registered in the Register of Medical Certificates for a total number of 288.8 million days of sickness absence (due to own illness, care for child and caring for another family member).

As we read in the report, compared to 2021, there was an increase in both the number of days of sickness absence by 2.2% and the number of medical certificates by 9.7%.

“People insured in ZUS A total of 25.2 million medical certificates were issued for 253.2 million days. Of this number, 21.8 million certificates are certificates issued for own illness. Compared to the previous year, we observe an increase of 6.7%. The number of days of sickness absence from these certificates amounted to 239 million days and was lower than that recorded in 2021 by 0.4%. – given.

The remaining days, which make up the total number of almost 290 million days of absence, are registered by KRUS and other institutions operating in Poland and abroad.

It was added that the average length of a medical certificate issued to persons insured with ZUS was 10.95 days, shortened by 6.6%. The number of people insured with ZUS who were issued a medical certificate at least once due to their own illness in 2022 was 7.1 million. Compared to the previous year, the number of these people increased by 9.3%.

It was written that the average length of sickness absence in 2022 per person insured with ZUS was 33.41 days (in 2021 – 36.66 days). In 2022, medical certificates issued to persons insured with ZUS due to their own illness were most often issued for a period of up to 5 days – 40.6%. certificates were valid for this number of days (including 5.8% of one-day certificates).

“Certificates of sickness absence of 6-10 days accounted for 24.3% of the total number of medical certificates, and certificates of 11-30 days – 30.2%. Among people insured in ZUS who are on medical certificates due to their own illness in 2022 “women slightly predominated, constituting 55.5% of this population,” we read in the analysis.

Reasons for sick leave

In the study, ZUS indicated that the analysis of the number of days of sickness absence by age showed that the highest percentage – 27.5 percent. days of sickness absence were recorded in the age group between 30-39 years.

“In the female population, the highest share of sickness absence (amounting to 31.4%) is observed in this age group. However, the share of men’s sickness absence increases with age in this population and the highest share (representing 23.7%) is observed in the age group of 40 -49 years old,” it was noted.

ZUS also announced that sickness absence in 2022 due to own illness of people insured with ZUS (in the context of the number of days of absence) was most often caused by diseases of the musculoskeletal system and connective tissue – 16.4%. total number of days of sickness absence (in 2021 – 16.5%).

Other reasons for dismissal were:

– pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum – 15.7 percent total number of days (in 2021 – 17%) – respiratory diseases – 14.2%. (in 2021 – 11.6 percent) – injuries, poisoning and other specific effects of external factors – 13.3 percent. (in 2021 – 13.1%) – mental and behavioral disorders – 10%. (in 2021 – 10.5%) – disease entities related to COVID-19 – 2.1%. (in 2021 – 2.3%)
