Fire-fighting and security measures have been completed at the illegal hazardous waste dump in Siemianowice Śląskie, the Silesian Crisis Management Center announced on Saturday. Security has been maintained on Rów Michałkowicki and Brynica.

Several thousand tons of chemical waste on fire

Fire at an illegal hazardous waste dump in Michałkowice – a district of Siemianowice Śląskie – exploded on Friday, May 10. The fire covered the entire landfill, i.e. approximately 6,000 square meters. According to estimates by the authorities of Siemianowice Śląskie, several thousand tons of various petroleum substances, solvents and paints, as well as similar amounts of plastic waste, were stored there in various containers.

After a week of firefighting, there are still dams on the rivers

The fire-fighting operation, which involved dozens of fire brigades, was limited on Monday to extinguishing the fire and securing the area. The report of the Silesian Crisis Management Center stated that the activities were finally completed on Friday, May 17 in the afternoon.

However, sorption dams were maintained in Rów Michałkowicki and Brynica, where water from firefighting operations together with chemicals flows. Voivode Marek Wójcik assured during a press conference that the Vistula River, where the water ultimately flows, is not at risk. No fish deaths were reported on the rivers.

A major investigation concerns 37 such places in Poland

The area of ​​the illegal landfill was handed over to police officers. The District Prosecutor's Office in Siemianowice Śląskie initiated an investigation into the fire, among others. in terms of endangering the life or health of many people, as well as storing waste contrary to regulations, which may endanger life or health or cause a decrease in the quality of water, air or the earth's surface.

It is possible that the case will be taken over by the Regional Prosecutor's Office in Katowice, where a large investigation is underway, one of the threads of which is the illegal landfill in Siemianowice Śląskie. It concerns a total of 37 such places in Poland.
