Sierra Leone. Tanker explosion. 144 people are dead, several dozen wounded in the hospital

The death toll from a fuel tanker explosion in the capital city of Sierra Leone has risen to 144, the health ministry said on Saturday. 52 people remain in the hospital, of which 11 are in critical condition. The tragedy happened in early November, when a truck hit a tanker with fuel.

The explosion occurred on November 5 at a gas station in the Wellington district on the eastern outskirts of Freetown, which is the capital of Sierra Leone. A truck crashed into the fuel tanker.


The death toll has increased

Sierra Leone’s health ministry said on Saturday that the death toll had risen to 144. Earlier estimates had been 115. Most of the victims were residents who filled their canisters with gasoline leaking from a damaged tanker.

The ministry also said that 57 people are still in hospital, and 11 of them are in critical condition.
