“Golden algae” in Silesia. The first alert level and warning state were announced at the Gliwice Canal
According to the analysis of the Central Research Laboratory of GIOŚ, the presence of 100 million cells of the “golden algae” in a liter of water from the Dzierżno Duże reservoir was shown. The number of algae in the Gliwice Canal is supposed to remain at a level of about 70 million cells per liter of water.
The authorities reported that for this reason, the notification procedure was launched on August 3 as part of the International Warning and Alert Plan for the Odra. In Pławniowice in the Gliwice district, the first alert level on the scale warning against the bloom of “golden algae” was introduced. A warning state was declared for the remaining areas near the Gliwice Canal.
Important warnings have been issued to residents
“For health safety reasons and to prevent the transfer of 'golden algae' to other reservoirs, please refrain from using the water (bathing, sports and recreation, fishing, contact of pets with water)” – it was reported on the gov.pl website. The ban on activities involving direct contact with water is to be in force until August 19 of this year.
What is equally important, the situation is to be monitored by crisis centers in the Silesian, Opole and Lower Silesian provinces and other services that are in constant contact with each other. The reservoirs have been covered by patrols of officers police. Any current information on the situation in the Gliwice Canal and the Dzierżno Duże reservoir are published on website of the Regional Water Management Board in Gliwice.
