Silvio Berlusconi, former three-time Prime Minister of Italy and founder of the Mediaset media empire, has died. The politician died at the age of 86 in Milan. In the last weeks of his life, it was reported that he was suffering from leukemia.

April 5 Silvio Berlusconi was admitted to the intensive care unit of the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan with suspected pneumonia. The next day, the media reported that he had leukemia. He was three times Prime Minister of Italy in 1994-1995, 2001-2006 and 2008-2011, as well as the founder of the political party Forza Italia and the media company Mediaset.

Silvio Berlusconi – who was he?

Silvio Berlusconi was born on September 29, 1936 in Milan. After high school, he studied law at the University of Milan. During his studies, he began to sing professionally at social events and on cruises around the Mediterranean Sea. He graduated in 1961, then founded the construction company Edilnord, thanks to which he gained recognition in his home area as a developer. His real estate business made him very rich.

A decade later, Berlusconi began his activity in the media. In 1974, he founded the cable television Telemilano, which grew into Italy’s largest media empire, Mediaset, controlling the three largest private television stations in the country. Berlusconi has accumulated his investments as part of the great family holding company Fininvest, which controls over 150 companies operating in, among others, financial, publishing, cultural and trade industries.

Silvio Berlusconi was a billionaire listed on the list of the richest people in the world, his fortune in April 2023 was valued at over $ 7 billion. In the years 1986-2017 he was the owner of the AC Milan football team.

Berlusconi had five children: Marina, Barbara, Pier Silvio, Eleonora and Luigi, as well as younger siblings: sister Maria Francesca Antonietta and brother Paolo.

Silvio Berlusconi in politics

In 1993, Silvio Berlusconi founded the political party Forza Italia, and a year later he became Prime Minister of Italy for the first time, leading a coalition with the National Alliance and the Northern League. After losing his prime ministership, Berlusconi maintained his parliamentary mandate and was also an MEP in 1999-2001. In 2001-2006, he returned to power at the head of the same coalition, and became prime minister for the third time in 2008. He resigned three years later due to the loss of the parliamentary majority. In the following years, he was twice elected to the Italian Senate, and in 2019 also again to the European Parliament.

In October 2022 Italy’s new government headed by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni was sworn inand Berlusconi’s Forza Italia became part of the ruling coalition together with the Italian Brothers party and the League.

Silvio Berlusconi – controversy

Silvio Berlusconi’s career was marked by many accusations and legal proceedings. In 2013, he was sentenced to prison for tax offenses and banned from public office for life, but was later acquitted on appeal. In the same year, he was also accused of bribing a witness for lying in a trial in which the politician was accused of using the services of a 17-year-old prostitute. From a bribery charge Silvio Berlusconi was acquitted in November 2022.

Silvio Berlusconi was also famous for his friendship with Vladimir Putin and he bragged about celebrating his birthday with him. In February 2023, in turn criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskysaying that “he would never go to talk to Zelensky, because we are seeing the destruction of his country and the massacre of its soldiers and citizens.”
