The authorities of Milan announced that from January 1, 2025, a ban on smoking in open public spaces, including on the street, will come into force. The exception will be isolated places where it will be possible to maintain a distance of 10 meters from other people. The ban does not apply to electronic cigarettes.
With the arrival of the new year, the regulations adopted by the city council and introduced in 2021 will be extended. For three years, smoking has been banned in the capital of Lombardy at bus stops, in parks and squares, in cemeteries and in sports areas. Now, however, the authorities of the Italian metropolis have announced that from January 1, smoking will be prohibited in all public areas, including streets.
The exception will be isolated places where it will be possible to maintain a distance of 10 meters from other people.
The issued statement emphasized that the purpose of these new regulations is to “discourage a lifestyle that may be harmful to the health of all people, not just smokers.” In addition, as it was added, 7 percent of suspended particulate matter emissions, which constitute part of the hazardous smogis the result of smoking tobacco.
Penalties for violating the new regulations will range from: 40 to 250 euros.
