Six victims of fatal heat waves, several hundred cases of stroke

– As a result of heat waves only in 2025, six people died – says the Ministry of Health of Mexico. Deaths occurred in the states: Veracruz (two cases), Tabasco (two cases), Chiapas (one case) and San Luis Potosí (one case). Until now, cases of solar stroke have been reported in 27 out of 31 states of Mexico. The most recorded in the state of Tabasco in the south of the country and in the centrally located jalisco – they are in total responsible for 31.3 percent of all reported cases in the country. The heat persists in most regions of the country. In many places, temperature range from 40 to 45 degrees Celsius. The government calls for caution: avoiding going outside in the hottest hours of the day, proper irrigation of the body and paying attention to the symptoms of overheating, especially in children, the elderly and the sick chronically.

Mexico has been struggling with extreme temperatures and weather phenomena for years. According to the North American Drough Monitor report, at the end of May 2024, almost 76 percent of Mexico's territory experienced drought. As for 2025, almost half of the Mexico territory at the end of April struggled with drought, as the National Water Commission said. For many regions that did not fully regain their balance after difficult conditions prevailing a year ago, this means potentially another difficult year.

– The water crisis in Mexico is serious and is a paradox. Although heavy rain has taken place in recent months, drought still persists in large areas of the country – said Elizabeth Olver Fuentes, a researcher from the National University of Autonomous. Despite heavy rainfall, there is still a lack of water in many regions of Mexico. The increase in temperatures and the lower availability of water resources negatively affect agriculture, local economies, as well as the quality of life of millions of Mexicans.
