This year's Kamila Skolimowska Memorial, in which athletes competed as part of the Diamond League, brought a lot of emotions. Two world records were broken in Chorzów, watched live by over 40,000 fans! One of the stars of the evening – especially for Polish fans – was Pia Skrzyszowska. The 23-year-old recently took part in the Olympic Games in Paris, where during the semi-final (12.55 s) she was just 0.03 s short of advancing to the medal phase in the 100 m hurdles.
Skrzyszowska told about a horrific injury. It makes your blood run cold
It was similar during Sunday's memorial. In her own backyard, Skrzyszowska also finished the competition in the semi-final, where she achieved a time of 12.58 s. – I ran as fast as I could. During the presentation I got goosebumps, because the atmosphere was incredible. Now we are still living these games, so it also helped the turnout – she said right after the competition, quoted by “Sports Review” Onet.
As it turned out, just a few minutes before the start of the race, Pia Skrzyszowska's performance was in question. All because of a horrific injury that she described in a conversation with journalists. The description of this event is blood-curdling.
– This time, the warm-up was literally sweat, blood and tears. When I was setting up the starting block, I drove a thorn into my finger with all my strength. I felt such pain that I was convinced that I had pierced my finger through and through. I have never seen blood gushing from a finger so much in my life. There was blood literally everywhere. Besides, I still have no feeling in that finger – she blurted out.
The 23-year-old showed her will to fight and didn't even think about giving up the competition. – I laugh about it now and I think it motivated me to start well. At first, it looked very serious and I needed medical help. I didn't consider withdrawing from the race, because I could have been covered in blood and I probably would have started anyway – she added.
