We are overwhelmed with current affairs, there is plenty of it. When entering this ministry, Minister Nowacka found, on the one hand, empty drawers, but on the other hand, a lot of challenges – said Sławomir Broniarz, president of the ZNP, in “Fakty po Faktach”. He also said that education faces new challenges due to the development of artificial intelligence. – We need to think about what kind of teachers we will need in five, ten, fifteen years, he said.

On the day of the end of the school year, the president was the guest of “Fakty po Faktach”. Polish Teachers' Union Sławomir Broniarz.

When asked what challenges await education in the times of developing artificial intelligence, Broniarz said that “after all, we need to change not so much the paradigm of education as a school, but think about what kind of graduate we will need in 2050.” – On the other hand, the issue of core curriculum and teacher education must also be prepared for this (development of artificial intelligence – ed.), says the head of the Polish Teachers' Union.

– We need to think about what kind of teachers we will need in five, ten, fifteen years. (…) When entering the profession, a young teacher after graduation has the prospect of 40 years of work ahead of him. He must be aware of continuous improvement (…) so that he is not only a partner, but also a guide for this student, because this world is changing rapidly – he added.

Broniarz believes that we “look at the problems in education in the short term.” – We are looking at changing the core curriculum, which is important. We look at what to do to reduce the weight of textbooks and relieve the burden on children. But we have to ask ourselves whether, for example, the Swedes are really wrong to return to paper textbooks and move away from digitalization, he said.

“We are overwhelmed by current affairs”

– It seems to me that it is worth investing in Polish education, but with some well-thought-out action, some well-thought-out steps. Here, the Ministry of National Education alone cannot cope with this. Cooperation with non-governmental organizations, teachers and young scientists is needed. We also need to find answers to the question of what this school will look like in a few or a dozen years, he said.

He said education faces many challenges – teachers' salaries, changing the core curriculum and planning for a school in the shadow of developing technology. – We are overwhelmed by such current issues, current events, because there are so many of them. Let me remind you that upon entering this ministry, Minister (Barbara) Nowacka found, on the one hand, empty drawers, but on the other hand, a lot of challenges – he added.

The guest of “Fakty po Faktach” also said what he thought about the change in reading lists. – We operate in a certain conservatism. I share the view that getting through “Nad Niemnem” or “Krzyżacy” was indeed a big challenge. We try to reconcile things that are difficult to reconcile. We will not encourage a child to read by showing him fragments of “The Deluge”, the canon of Polish readings, which are repulsive from the point of view of attractiveness, when he is dealing with fantastic, short texts that he expects – said Broniarz.
