Slovakia. A dust storm hit the highway. Giant traffic jams, many accidents

Than Diethelm led to numerous weather difficulties in Slovakia on Saturday. In the western part of the country, the wind was strong enough to pick up sand and dust that fell on the highway, causing giant traffic jams and many accidents. The wind also caused damage in the capital, Bratislava, where it toppled trees and billboards and downed power lines.

On Saturday, the Diethelm low passed over Slovakia – the same one that recently also shaped the weather in Poland, among others. Strong winds were felt the most in the western part of the country and in the mountains. Preliminary findings of meteorologists indicated that in mountainous areas gusts of wind could reach speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour.

Dust fell on the highway

Firefighters intervened in over 150 locations across the country. There were huge difficulties on the D2 motorway near Bratislava. At the height of the Rusovce district, the wind blew so hard that the gusts kicked up dust and sand from the surrounding fields. The road was flooded and drivers had to stop and wait storms in cars. There were huge traffic jams and numerous vehicle collisions.

Probably the same phenomenon led to over the weekend carom in Hungary, near Budapest.

Troubles also in Bratislava

Trees fell in many towns in western Slovakia and in the mountains. In Stara Lubovla, the wind tore off part of the roof of the local school. Damage was also reported in Bratislava itself. In one of the districts of the capital, a strong gust knocked over a billboard that fell on the road. Gusts of wind knocked down a power line near the train station, causing further disruption.
