An unusual guest visited Reporter24 during a trip to Slovakia. A bear appeared near a guesthouse in Starý Smokovec, rummaging through a garbage bin in search of treats. Although these animals may look funny, it is worth remembering that they are dangerous predators.
Mr. Maciej, a tourist from Poznanwho arrives in Slovakia with his wife. On Saturday at around 4:30 a.m. they noticed an unusual sight outside their window. The bear, which they managed to record from a room in a guesthouse in Starý Smokovec, was busy looking for something to eat in a nearby garbage container.
“He was probably looking for some pizza”
– This is our last day in Slovakia. My wife woke up earlier, getting ready to go to the mountains. She went to the bathroom, and when she came out, she saw this bear cub outside the window. She immediately called me and showed me the animal rummaging through a garbage container looking for something to eat. My wife was a little scared, but I think it was a nice experience to be able to watch a wild animal from such a close distance – said the Internet user.
Mr. Maciej explained that the presence of a large container with garbage was caused by renovations taking place in a nearby building. – (The bear – ed.) was probably looking for some pizza or other delicacy for a few minutes, maybe two, and then went back to the forest – he reported.
– The guesthouse is on the outskirts of town, nearby there is a forest from which the bear probably came. However, this was my first encounter of this type. My wife and I are passionate about tourism and we have seen foxes on the trails, but never a bear – he said.
How to behave?
Although Reporter24 was not in danger, from time to time we can come across bears on a mountain trail or in the city. The Tatra National Park reminds us that in the event of an encounter, we should not panic – we should keep our distance and retreat. Even disturbed animals usually calm down when a person starts to move away.
You should be especially careful when meeting a bear family. You should not get between a mother bear and her cubs, as this can provoke the mother to attack in defense of the cubs. Bears can also be more aggressive when food is at stake – the animals see us as potential competition.
